The Motives Behind the Use of Free Indirect Style in Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Abstract

The present study aims at investigating certain reasons behind the use of free indirect style in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility in order to show the role of the discourse to create an empathy or sympathy responses toward the reader through character’s thoughts, actions, speech, to highlight the significance of this style in both linguistic and literature, and to explore the aesthetic values of this style on literary works. In order to conduct this study, we follow a descriptive analytical method to approach some extracts from the given corpus to analyze the given effects accomplished by the reader when he or she interacts with those stretches of speech. Therefore, we conclude that the aim of Austen's use of free indirect style in Sense and Sensibility is to give her readers space to make their judgments about characters' thoughts and speech. Then, it tends to create sympathy and empathy responses to certain characters.Le but de ce mémoire est analysé les causes principaux et l'effets pour utiliser le style indirect libre dans le roman "Sens et Sensibilité" avec l'auteur anglais Jane Austen. Cette étude examine l'objectif de discours pour inventer sympathie réaction de lecteur. Le connotation de ce style dans linguistique et leur représentation dans littérature. Aussi, il intéresse avec les values esthétique. Notre étude adopte la méthode analytique pour explorer certaines effets d'utiliser le style indirect libre dans cette roman au lecteur. Dernière, Austen reussit, dans sa grand mesure dans l'utilisation du style indirect libre pour dominer le lecteur et elle le mis entre dans le monde du roman, spécifiquement dans le raison caractère selon leurs paroles et idées.
