Abstract

The study under investigation aims at analyzing Salinger's controversial novel The Catcher from an existentialist point of view through exploring the existential themes that may characterize Holden as an existentialist hero and the novel as whole as an existential literary work thereby expanding the meanings readers can find in this prominent American novel. We use Existentialism as a theoretical framework because it is foremost an attitude of revolt and it is chiefly in man's perception that he is living in irrational universe. Kierkegaard’s, Heidegger’s and Sartre’s concepts of death, alienation and authenticity will be utilized. Therefore, it is multi-dimensional analysis of Salinger’s The Catcher. The results reveal that Holden Caufield is perceiving death subjectively, his preoccupation with death is the utmost cause of his alienated from the phonies and that was the first step towards his quest of authentic self. As result of finding other prominent existential themes namely myth and confined situation, The Catcher is an existential novel.L'étude à l'étude vise à analyser roman controversé de Salinger L'Attrape-cœurs d'un point de vue existentialiste en explorant les thèmes existentiels qui peuvent caractériser Holden comme un héros existentialiste et le roman dans son ensemble comme une œuvre littéraire existentielle élargissant ainsi les significations, les lecteurs peuvent trouver dans cette roman américain de premier plan. Nous utilisons Existentialisme comme un cadre théorique car il est avant tout une attitude de révolte et il est surtout dans la perception de l'homme qu'il vit dans l'univers irrationnel. Kierkegaard, Heidegger et les concepts de Sartre de la mort, l'aliénation et l'authenticité seront utilisés. Par conséquent, il est l'analyse multidimensionnelle de Salinger L'Attrape-cœurs . Les résultats révèlent que Holden Caufield est percevoir la mort subjectivement, sa préoccupation avec la mort est la plus grande cause de sa aliénée des phonies et qui a été le premier pas vers sa quête de soi authentique. Comme résultat de trouver d'autres thèmes existentiels importants à savoir le mythe et la situation confinée, L'Attrape-cœurs est un roman existentiel.
