أصبح الكمبيوتر حجر أساس في ثقافة أي مجتمع وفي شتى مجالات الحياة، ويعتبر من أهم أدوات المعرفة، وبما أن العصر الحالي هو عصر المعلومات وأنظمتها والبحث عن أفضل استخداماتها بأقل تكلفة ووقت، ولهذا زادت أهمية المعلومات في العصر الحديث نتيجة التطور التكنولوجي والذي واكبه تطور الحواسيب و البرمجيات. مما أدى ذلك إلى توفر الوقت والجهد وسرعة نقل البيانات والمعلومات إلى مستخدميها. إن استخدامات الحواسيب متعددة، منها تخزين ومعالجة المعلومات والتي تعتبر عنصراً هام من العناصر المساهمة في سيرورة المؤسسة ، وأخص بالذكر في هذا المجال الذي نحن بصدد دراسته هـي المعلومات المحاسبية، والتي هي من أهم المعلومات التي يسعى المـستخدم لحـصول عليهـا ، ولهذا يجب أن تصف هذه المعلومات المحاسبية بعدة خصائص رئيـسية مثل الملائمة، والموثوقية، والثبات وقابليتها للمقارنة حتى تصبح هذه المعلومـات مفيدة وكاملة من جميع جوانبها.
