Abstract

The adoption of the principles of sustainable development is considered as a crucial mechanism. It enables governments and peoples to meet the needs and desires of the current generations as well as respecting the right of future generations in natural resources and to live safely.The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector is considered an essential pillar for the economic and social development because of its ability to minimize the rate of unemployment and create resources, stimulating investment in various fields. Thus, developing and promoting such kind of enterprises is a priority fordeveloping and developed countries. The tourism sector is one of the most important economic and social phenomena in nowadays world. It is considered as the third most important productive sector which occupies a significant position in the economies of many developing and developed countries. Therefore, the study attempted to highlight the extent to which small and medium tourism enterprises contribute in achieving sustainable development in Algeria. The latter is very rich of its tourism resources in addition to a sector of small and medium enterprises which represents a percentage of 98% of its whole economy. The results are based on crucial indicators, such as the rate of contribution of the Gross domestic product (GDP) and the value added, as well as the proportion of the earned revenues in addition to the number of jobs provided bySmall and Medium Enterprises (SME) in general and the tourism ones in particular. The final outcomes indicate that Algeria has achieved significant results in terms of sustainable development depending on the aforementioned sectors. Algeria is pursuing a policy which shows itsclear desire towards the development of tourism and small and medium enterprises. This is reflected in its Guiding Plan for Tourism Planning for the 2025 Horizons. However, these results are insufficient and under the expected level if compared with the qualifications possessed by Algeria at all levels.
