Symbolism in The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai 1947

Abstract

The study attempts to investigate symbolism in the second most famous novel of Osamu Dazai, The Setting Sun (1947). He is telling the story of a small family that contains the narrator Kazuko her younger brother Naoji and their parents and what happened with them after the Second World War. I aim through my research paper to draw the attention to this rich literature and give an idea to reading lovers and those who are interested in Japanese culture the chance to know more about it in an academic way. This study is divided into three chapter : the first chapter is a literature review on symbolism, the second one is an over-view about the novel The Setting Sun and the third is the analysis of the used symbolism in the novel. The author used symbols to convey a hidden massages to a certain class in their society. The analysis of symbolism in the novel shows that this literary work is more likely to be a fictional autobiography of the writer rather than being a narrative work. Most of the events included by Osamu Dazai are a real experience and actually happened with him. He expressed his inner thoughts, beliefs and philosophy through the character Kazuko and his feeling and real self through Naoji aiming to send his voice to the world in order to get some help with his pain but he ended up losing himself.

Cette étude vise à enquêter le symbolisme dans le deuxième roman le plus re-nommé d'Osamu Dazai, le Soleil couchant "The Setting Sun" (1947). Il raconte l'histoire d'une petite famille qui comprend la narratrice Kazuko, son jeune frère Naoji et leurs parents et ce qui s'est passé avec eux après la Seconde Guerre mon-diale. L’objectif de mon mémoire est d'amorcer les discussions sur cette riche littérature et de donner aux amateurs de lecture et à ceux qui s'intéressent à la culture japonaise la possibilité d'en savoir plus de manière académique. Cette étude est divisée en trois chapitres : le premier chapitre est une revue de la littérature sur le symbolisme, le deuxième est un aperçu du roman "Le Soleil cou-chant" et le troisième est l'analyse du symbolisme appliqué dans ce roman. L'au-teur a exploité des symboles pour qu’il puisse transmettre implicitement des massages à une certaine classe de leur société. L'analyse du symbolisme dans le roman dévoile que cette œuvre littéraire est plus probable d'être une autobiographie fictive de l'écrivain plutôt que d'être une œuvre narrative. La plupart des événements inclus par Osamu Dazai sont une véritable expérience et se sont réellement produits avec lui. Il a bien exprimé ses pensées intérieures, ses croyances et sa philosophie à travers le personnage de Kazuko et ses sentiments et son vrai moi grâce à Naoji dans le but d’adresser sa voix au monde et d'obtenir du soutien avec sa douleur, mais il a fini par se perdre.
