Developing postgraduate EFL students academic writing techniques and strategies in writing a dissertation:the case of second year master ESP and applied linguistics students at UKMO

Abstract

The present study aims at investigating the kinds of difficulties that second-year Master ESP and Applied Linguistics students face when writing a dissertation. Writing a dissertation is a difficult process that requires considerable effort and practice by learners’ to reach an acceptable degree of academic writing. For this purpose, the different characteristics, techniques and strategies of writing a dissertation are in-depth searched and described. Through a questionnaire administered to forty-seven (47) second year Master ESP and Applied Linguistics students at the Department of English Language and Literature at Kasdi Merbah University_Ouargla, we intend to investigate the problems these students encounter when writing a dissertation. The findings gathered in this study yielded useful insights about these problems these are the result of a lack of knowledge about the academic writing characteristics, techniques and strategies. Finally, this dissertation aims at suggesting some strategies which written expression teachers can have recourse to in their classes in order to help and pave the way for their learners for the sake of an effective academic writing, to motivate their writing abilities and especially to remove their trepidation of how to write a dissertation. Some suggestions are made to Written Expression teachers to help learners to write academically

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على أنواع الصعوبات التي تواجه طلبة السنة ثانية ماستر تخصص إنجليزية لأغراض خاصة ولسانيات تطبيقية عند قيامهم بكتابة مذكرة، و تعتبر كتابة المذكرة عملية صعبة تقتضي من المتعلمين بذل الكثير من الجهد إلى للوصول إلى مستوى مقبول من الكتابة الأكاديمية، ولهذا الغرض تم تناول مختلف جوانب الكتابة الأكاديمية وأساليبها واستراتيجياتها من خلال استبيان ودراسة تجريبية موجهة لطلبة السنة الثانية ماستر تخصص إنجليزية لأغراض خاصة ولسانيات تطبيقية لقسم اللغات الأجنبية تخصص لغة إنجليزية بجامعة قاصدي مرباح ورقلة، و كشفت نتائج هذه الدراسة عن بعض الأفكار التي قد تفيد في تحديد الصعوبات التي تعيق الطلبة في كتابتهم للمذكرة والناتجة عن عدم إلمامهم بخصائص الكتابة الأكاديمية واستراتيجياتها و تهدف هذه الدراسة أيضا إلى اقتراح بعض الاستراتيجيات التي يمكن أن يتبعها أساتذة مقياس التعبير الكتابي والتي من شأنها مساعدة المتعلمين على الوصول إلى مستوى كتابة أكاديمية فعالة و تحفيز قدراتهم في الكتابة وخصوصا الكتابة الأكاديمية.

Cette étude vise à identifier les types de difficultés auxquelles sont confrontés les étudiants de deuxième année de master en anglais spécialisé et linguistique appliquée lorsqu'ils rédigent un mémoire. niveau acceptable d'écriture académique Aborder divers aspects de l'écriture académique, ses méthodes et ses stratégies par le biais d'un questionnaire et d'une étude expérimentale destinée aux étudiants de deuxième année se spécialisant en anglais à des fins spéciales et en linguistique appliquée au Département des langues étrangères, se spécialisant en anglais à l'Université de KasdiMerbah Ouargla Les résultats de cette étude ont permis de dégager quelques idées qui peuvent être utiles pour identifier les difficultés qui entravent Cette étude vise également à suggérer quelques stratégies pouvant être suivies par les enseignants de l'échelle d'expression écrite, qui aideraient les apprenants à atteindre le niveau d'écriture académique efficace et stimuler leurs capacités en écriture, en particulier en écriture académique.
