Symbolism In Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol: A Psychoanalytic Approach

Abstract

Literature is a voyage documented in words propelled by the reader’s imagination. It is a written criticism and interpretation of life. Charles dickens is one of the most prominent writers during the Victorian era. His works are masterpieces, intellectual and literary references for writers and readers. A Christmas Carol is Dickens’s novella which tells story about a man who was visited by three ghosts which each of them gives lessons in life to the protagonist “Ebenezer Scrooge”. The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the aim behind the overuse of symbolism in novella by using Alfred North Whitehead theory and to show the conflict of the protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge and the other characters. The conflict is classified into internal and external conflict. The internal conflict occurs because Scrooge feels anxiety, fear, and disappointment that affect the main character's inner soul. The external conflict occurs between himself and another person who influences the psychological condition. The data of this thesis is taken from a novel entitled A Christmas Carol. This novel is analysed to find out symbolism and psychological side which occurred towards the protagonist, the main characters and themes. To complete this analysis, we relied on Freud’s theory to analyse psycho of the characters, and we also worked with Whitehead theory to identify the aim of the overuse of symbols.

La littérature est un voyage documenté en mots propulsé par l'imaginaire du lecteur. C'est une critique écrite et une interprétation de la vie. Charles Dickens est l'un des écrivains les plus en vue de l'ère victorienne. Ses œuvres sont des chefs-d'œuvre, des références intellectuelles et littéraires pour les écrivains et les lecteurs. A Christmas Carol est la nouvelle de Dickens qui raconte l'histoire d'un homme qui a été visité par trois fantômes dont chacun donne des leçons de vie au protagoniste "Ebenezer Scrooge". Le but principal de cette thèse est d'explorer le but derrière l'utilisation excessive du symbolisme dans la nouvelle en utilisant la théorie d'Alfred North Whitehead et de montrer le conflit du protagoniste Ebenezer Scrooge et des autres personnages. Le conflit est classé en conflit interne et externe. Le conflit interne se produit parce que Scrooge ressent de l'anxiété, de la peur et de la déception qui affectent l'âme intérieure du personnage principal. Le conflit externe se produit entre lui-même et une autre personne qui influence l'état psychologique. Les données de cette thèse sont tirées d'un roman intitulé A Christmas Carol. Ce roman est analysé pour découvrir le côté symbolique et psychologique qui s'est produit envers le protagoniste, les personnages principaux et les thèmes. Pour compléter cette analyse, nous nous sommes appuyés sur la théorie de Freud pour analyser la psycho des personnages, et nous avons également travaillé avec la théorie de Whitehead pour identifier le but de la surutilisation des symboles.

يستخدم الكتاب طرق وتقنيات أدبية بطريقة مميزة لتجسيد مهاراتهم الكتابية. تدور هذه الدراسة حول مدى انعكاس شخصية ايبنزغ سكرودج في رواية تشالز ديكنز "أنشودة عيد الميلاد" التي تتناول مواضيع مختلفة مثل عيد الميلاد وتأثير الطبقية والفقر. حيث تبدأ أحداث الرواية عند اقتراب عيد الميلاد فتستقبل الشخصية الرئيسية شبحا زائرا غير متوقع حيث ينبهه من ثلاثة أشباح آخرين قد يغير ذلك من مسار مستقبله. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التحليل النفسي للشخصيات وكيفية استعمال التقنية الرمزية في الرواية، كما تسعى أيضا إلى تسليط الضوء على دوافع استخدام هذه التقنيات الأدبية. تنقسم الدراسة إلى أربعة فصول: الفصلين الأولين يعرض فيهما مراجعة عامة للصور البلاغية والنظريات لأهم الباحثين. كما يوضح الفصلين الأخيرين الجانب التطبيقي والنقدي للأسلوب ،الشخصيات والمواضيع المتطرقة في رواية تشارلز ديكنز.
