Abstract

This dissertation explores the intersection of literary texts and (AI), particularly focusing on the field of poetic translation. The research explores the extent to which ChatGPT 3.5, an AI language model, can enhance the translation of poetry, with a specific emphasis on Arabic poetry. The study's primary research questions probe the comparative efficacy of ChatGPT and human translation in preserving the rhythmic and aesthetic qualities inherent in Arabic poetry, as well as the impact of human intervention in the translation process. Building upon these questions, the hypotheses posit that while ChatGPT has the potential to improve poetic translation, it may not surpass the nuanced capabilities of the human mind. It is hypothesized that ChatGPT3.5 excels at formal aspects of translation from Arabic to English, especially in maintaining poetic structure, while its performance in capturing semantic nuances is expected to be more proficient in English-to-English rendering. Additionally, the study posits that the quality of results is contingent upon the precision and effectiveness of the prompts given to ChatGPT. The comparative contrastive analytical methodology employed in this research entails theoretical and practical components. The theoretical exploration encompasses discussions on the forms and meanings of poem translation, as well as an examination of the intersection between AI technology and poetry translation. In the practical segment, two poems by Nizar Qabbani, "بلقيس" and "قارئة الفنجان", are selected for analysis. Human Translationof these poems, rendered into English by Kevin Moore, serve as a benchmark for comparison. The poems are then enhanced using ChatGPT and translated into Shelley style. A meticulous comparison is conducted between the Human Translation of these Poems and the original Arabic poems, followed by a contrast between the enhanced versions and the human translations. Additionally, the study examines the fidelity of each translation by comparing the original Arabic poems with their respective back translations. Overall, this dissertation provides valuable insights into the capabilities and limitations of AI in the realm of poetic translation, shedding light on the interplay between technology and human creativity in the domain of literary translation. Both Human and AI-assisted translations excelled in capturing Qabbani's poetry essence but differed in meter and rhyme. Enhanced translations focused on metaphorical imagery and formal qualities, while human translations emphasized universal sentiments and cultural authenticity.
