Celebrating the mundane of The American Society in Raymond carver’s “Cathedral” and Tobias Wolff’s “ The Liar”.

Abstract

This study focuses mainly on shedding light on daily lifestyle and literature of the 1980s America, a period coinciding with the emergence of the Dirty Realism movement which was accompanied by the prominence of several renowned writers, most notably Raymond Carver and Tobias Wolff, who are known for portraying the essence of American life in their short stories. Raymond Carver and Tobias Wolff emerged as leading figures within the Dirty Realism as they adopted the minimalist style, which is a genre of literature that prospered during the 1980s in America, focusing mainly on the simple, contemporary way of life and the everyday lives of people. This study follows the New Historicism theory, which is based on analyzing and linking the text and its historical and cultural context. This theory is applied to the two short stories “Cathedral” (1981) by Raymond Carver and “The Liar” (1981) by Tobias Wolff and aims at investigating the way in which their short stories reflect American life at that time. This study intends to examine how Raymond Carver and Tobias Wolff celebrated the mundane of American society in their short stories.

Cette étude se concentre principalement sur l'illumination du mode de vie quotidien et de la littérature en Amérique pendant les années 1980, en parallèle avec l'émergence du mouvement de la réalité sale. Ce mouvement a été accompagné par la montée en puissance de plusieurs écrivains renommés, notamment Raymond Carver et Tobias Wolff, qui sont connus pour avoir incarné l'essence de la vie américaine dans leurs nouvelles. Carver et Wolff sont apparus comme des figures de proue au sein du mouvement de la réalité sale, adoptant un style minimaliste et se concentrant sur les aspects ordinaires de l'existence humaine . Carver et Wolff ont adopté le style minimaliste, un genre littéraire qui a prospéré dans les années 1980 en Amérique, se concentrant principalement sur le mode de vie simple et contemporain ainsi que sur la vie quotidienne des gens. Cette étude suit la théorie du nouveau historicisme, qui se base sur l'analyse et le lien entre le texte et son contexte historique et culturel. Cette théorie est appliquée sur les deux nouvelles «La cathédrale » (1981) de Raymond Carver et «Le menteur» (1981) de Tobias Wolff, pour examiner la manière dont leurs nouvelles reflètent la vie américaine de cette époque. Dans cet article, j'ai l'intention d'examiner comment Raymond Carver et Tobias Wolff ont célébré le quotidien de la société américaine dans leurs nouvelles «La cathédrale » et «Le menteur».

ركز هذه الدراسة بشكل رئيسي على تسليط الضوء على نمط الحياة اليومية والأدب في أمريكا خلال فترة الثمانينيات، وذلك بالتزامن مع ظهور حركة الواقعية القذرة. التي رافقها بروز العديد من الكتّاب المشهورين، على رأسهم رايموند كارفر وتوبياس وولف، اللذان اشتهرا بتجسيد جوهر الحياة الأمريكية في قصصهم القصيرة.ظهر كارفر ووولف كشخصيات بارزة ضمن حركة الواقعية القذرة ، بحيث اعتمد كل من الكاتبين كارفر وولف الأسلوب الأدبي البسيط، وهو نوع من الأدب ازدهر خلال الثمانينيات في أمريكا، بحيث ركزوا بشكل أساسي على أسلوب الحياة البسيط والمعاصر وحياة الناس اليومية. تتبع هذه الدراسة النظرية التاريخية الجديدة التي تقوم على تحليل النص وربطه بسياقه التاريخي والثقافي. طبقت هذه النظرية على نوعين من القصص القصيرة «الكاتدرائية» (1981) لريموند كارفر و«الكذاب» (1981) لتوبياس وولف، لتقصي الطريقة التي تعكس بها قصصهما القصيرة الحياة الأمريكية في ذلك الوقت. أنوي في هذا البحث تحليل كيفية احتفال ريموند كارفر وتوبياس وولف بدنيوية المجتمع الأمريكي في قصتيهما القصيرتين «الكاتدرائية» و«الكذاب».
