The Use of Vernacular Language and Code-Switching in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God

Abstract

The present dissertation investigates the use of vernacular language and code-switching in Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, paying attention to their role in expressing the protagonist’s search for love, voice, and independence. It analyses how Hurston's artistic use of language - especially African American Vernacular English (AAVE) - works not only as a means of realistic representation but also as a powerful tool for identity construction and cultural resistance. The combination of vernacular speech and code-switching also reflects the social dynamics and inner transformation of her central character, Janie Crawford. Drawing on theories by Henry Louis Gates Jr., John J. Gumperz, and Carol Myers-Scotton, the study interprets how language is employed to mirror power relations, emotional growth, and shifting self-perceptions. In addition, this research considers Hurston’s own life experiences, revealing strong resemblancebetween the author and her main character. Through close textual and linguistic analysis, this dissertation highlights the expressive capacity of AAVE and how Hurston’s stylistic choices elevate the cultural and thematic significance of her work. The analysis also emphasizes the novel’s function as a narrative of empowerment, where language becomes a vehicle for asserting identity, reclaiming voice, and challenging dominant societal norms. Ultimately,this studyaims to contribute to the fields of African American literature, stylistics, and feminist literary criticism by foregrounding the interplay between language, identity, and freedom in Hurston’s celebrated novel.
