A Multicultural Reading of Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia

Abstract

This dissertation provides a multicultural reading of Hanif Kureishi's work, The Buddha of Suburbia. The work addresses multicultural London, where immigrants struggle to assimilate or pave a path for their future. It also depicts the hardships these immigrants face due to other people's false representations of them. That is to say, Kureishi illustrates the impact of stereotypes on the minorities that lived in 1970s London. Therefore, this work might be considered the ideal piece for this study. The primary purpose of this study is to examine Kureishi's work through a multicultural lens thoroughly. Through this investigation, the researcher will concentrate on addressing the multicultural aspects of London and its diversity. The researcher will also address the complicated lives of immigrants and the adversity they had to endure because of the violence and racism which resulted from the negative way others perceived them. Stuart Hall's theory of multiculturalism will be implemented to reach this aim. That is to say, the researcher will pinpoint the multicultural aspects of the novel. This research identifies the various multicultural features of London. It also distinguishes how the multicultural society shaped the characters' perception of identity. Furthermore, this dissertation tackles the West's stereotypical representation of the East and its impact on the lives of minorities.
