Evaluating The Translation of Commercial Signage in Touggourt and Oued Souef

Abstract

In the era of globalization and cultural openness, translation has become an indispensable tool for conveying information and facilitating interaction among peoples especially in culturally diverse societies such as Algeria. The cities of Touggourt and Oued Souf are among the most culturally rich and demographically diverse regions in the country. They represent a model of intense and varied commercial activity, encompassing numerous retail stores in addition to educational, healthcare, and governmental institutions. This reflects a socio-economic fabric marked by multiculturalism. Given this diversity, clarity in the translation of commercial signage is essential to ensure smooth interaction with customers, facilitate understanding of services and products offered, and build trust between sellers and consumers. However, the prevalence of visible translation errors particularly on shopfronts can hinder this communication. Such errors may create linguistic barriers, lead to misunderstandings, weaken the effectiveness of marketing messages, and potentially leave a negative impression on customers. These errors vary from linguistic to semantic, often resulting from literal translations or the use of machine translation tools without human review. From this perspective, our study aims to analyze the translation errors found in commercial signs in the cities of Touggourt and Oued Souf, while highlighting the associated challenges and identifying areas in need of improvement. The research also seeks to provide documented real life examples and offer practical recommendations that contribute to the development of effective strategies ensuring translations that are accurate, consistent, and contextually appropriate. The significance of this research lies not only in addressing a linguistic issue but also in exploring the communicative and commercial dimensions of translation in public spaces, making it a valuable contribution to the field of translation studies particularly within multilingual contexts influenced by globalization and cultural diversity.

في ظل العولمة والانفتاح الثقافي، أصبحت الترجمة وسيلة لا غنى عنها لنقل المعلومات وتسهيل التفاعل بين الشعوب، لا سيما في المجتمعات المتنوعة ثقافيًا كالجزائر. وتُعدُّ مدينتي "تقرت" و "وادي" سوف من أكثر المدن الجزائرية تنوعًا سكانيًا وغنًى ثقافيًا، وهما تمثلان نموذجًا للنشاط التجاري الكثيف و المتنوع، إذ يشمل العديد من المحلات التجارية إلى جانب مؤسسات تعليمية وصحية وخدمات حكومية، مما يعكس طبيعة اجتماعية واقتصادية متعددة الثقافات. ونظرًا لهذا الطابع المتنوع، فإن وضوح الترجمة في اللافتات التجارية يُعد أمرًا ضروريًا لضمان سهولة التفاعل مع الزبائن، وتيسير فهم الخدمات والمنتجات المعروضة، وتعزيز الثقة بين البائعين والمستهلكين. ومع ذلك، فإن الأخطاء الظاهرة في الترجمة، والتي تنتشر بشكل خاص على واجهات المحلات التجارية، قد تُعرقل هذا التواصل، كما تُحدث حواجز لغوية تؤدي إلى سوء الفهم، وتُضعف من فعالية الرسائل التسويقية، وربما تترك انطباعًا سلبيًا لدى الزبائن. وتتنوع هذه الأخطاء بين لغوية ودلالية، وقد تكون نتيجة الاعتماد على ترجمات حرفية أو استخدام أدوات ترجمة آلية دون مراجعة بشرية. من هذا المنطلق، تهدف دراستنا إلى تحليل الأخطاء الترجمية الظاهرة في اللافتات التجارية بمدينتي تقرت ووادي سوف، مع تسليط الضوء على التحديات المرتبطة بها، وتحديد المجالات التي تتطلب تحسينًا. كما تسعى إلى تقديم أمثلة واقعية موثقة، وتوصيات عملية تُسهم في تطوير استراتيجيات فعالة تضمن ترجمة دقيقة، متناسقة، وملائمة للسياق المحلي. وتكمن أهمية هذا البحث في كونه لا يعالج فقط مسألة لغوية، بل يتناول أيضًا البُعد الاتصالي والتجاري للترجمة في الفضاء العام، مما يجعله مساهمة علمية في ميدان دراسات الترجمة، خصوصًا في السياقات متعددة اللغات التي تتأثر بالعولمة والتنوع الثقافي.
