Subtitling Space Science for Arab Audiences Case Study: “Interstellar”

Abstract

This research explores the translation of space science and the challenges of subtitling scientific contexts, taking the movie “Interstellar” as a case study. The translation is examined from several perspectives such as accuracy, correctness, and reliability, while also taking ethical narrative into consideration. The theoretical part of the study begins by tracing the history of translation in general and in the context of space science in particular, along with audiovisual translation and the complexities that may arise during the subtitling process. The practical part applies this theoretical study to the analysis of twenty selected scenes from the film. Some scenes were chosen for their dense scientific and technical jargon, others for their philosophical and ethical themes, and the rest for their emotional content revolving around love and sacrifice. The analysis is based on a comparative approach between the source and the target texts, evaluating whether the subtitler succeeded in delivering the intended meaning or if some mistranslations occurred or nuances were lost. Moreover, the research investigates the challenges that may obstruct the faithful rendering of the source text, especially when the core of the corpus is based on scientific terminology and sensitive thematic concepts. This highlights the importance of preserving ethical narratives. This study was undertaken due to its strictly scientific nature, as it tackles a topic that has rarely been addressed before. Through a detailed study, it became evident that the subtitling of the film lacked key elements of quality, particularly accuracy, correctness and readability, due to the density of the scientific content. To conclude, the study proposes a set of practical recommendations that help improve the future subtitling of scientific films, while preserving both linguistic accuracy and ethical narrative.

Cette recherche explore la traduction des sciences spatiales et les défis liés au sous-titrage dans des contextes scientifiques, en prenant le film Interstellar comme étude de cas. La traduction est examinée sous plusieurs angles, notamment l’exactitude, la justesse et la fiabilité, tout en prenant en compte la dimension éthique du récit. La partie théorique de l’étude retrace d’abord l’histoire de la traduction en général, puis dans le domaine spécifique des sciences spatiales, ainsi que celle de la traduction audiovisuelle et des complexités pouvant survenir lors du processus de sous-titrage. La partie pratique applique cette étude théorique à l’analyse de vingt scènes sélectionnées du film. Certaines scènes ont été choisies pour leur densité en jargon scientifique et technique, d'autres pour leurs thèmes philosophiques et éthiques, et les restantes pour leur contenu émotionnel centré sur l’amour et le sacrifice. L’analyse repose sur une approche comparative entre les textes source et cible, évaluant si le sous-titreur est parvenu à transmettre le sens voulu ou si des erreurs de traduction ou des pertes de nuances se sont produites. De plus, la recherche examine les obstacles pouvant entraver une restitution fidèle du texte source, en particulier lorsque le corpus repose sur une terminologie scientifique complexe et des thématiques sensibles. Cela souligne l’importance de préserver la narration éthique. Cette étude a été entreprise en raison de sa nature strictement scientifique, abordant un sujet rarement traité auparavant. L’analyse détaillée a révélé que le sous-titrage du film manquait de plusieurs éléments de qualité, notamment en ce qui concerne l’exactitude, la justesse et la lisibilité, en raison de la densité du contenu scientifique. En conclusion, l’étude propose un ensemble de recommandations pratiques visant à améliorer le sous-titrage futur des films scientifiques, tout en préservant à la fois l’exactitude linguistique et la narration éthique.

تتناول هذه الدراسة ترجمة علم الفضاء والتحديات التي تندرج تحت ترجمة السياقات العلمية، وذلك من خلال اعتماد فيلم "انترستلر" كنموذج لدراسة حالة. حيث يتم اختبار جودة الترجمة من عدة منظورات بمن فيها الدقة، الصحة اللغوية، والمصداقية مع الاخذ بعين الاعتبار السرديات القيميّة. عرجت الدراسة في الجزء النظري بتتبع المسار التاريخي للترجمة بشكل عام وترجمة علم الفضاء على وجه الخصوص، مع التطرق إلى الترجمة السمعية البصرية وما تنطوي عليه من تعقيدات أثناء عملية السترجة. أما بخصوص الشق التطبيقي، فيستند إلى تطبيق هذه الدراسة النظرية على تحليل عشرين مشهد مختار من الفيلم، تم اختيار بعضها لما تحمله من مصطلحات علمية وتقنية دقيقة، وأخرى لمضامينها الفلسفية والأخلاقية، فيما تم اختيار الباقي لما تحمله من مضمون عاطفي يتمحور حول الحب والتضحية ويعتمد التحليل على منهج المقارنة بين النص الأصل والهدف، بهدف تقييم مدى نجاح المترجم في نقل المعنى المقصود ورصد ما إذا كانت أي ترجمات غير دقيقة أو فقدان بعض الدلالات. كما تسلط الدراسة الضوء على أبرز التحديات التي تعيق تحقيق ترجمة أمينة للنص الاصل، لا سيما عندما يكون جوهر الفيلم مبنيا على مصطلحات علمية ومفاهيم حساسة، مما يبرز أهمية الحفاظ على السرديات القيميّة. اختيرت هذه الدراسة نظرا˝ لطابعها العلمي البحت، إذ أنها تتناول موضوعا نادرا ما تم التطرق إليه من قبل، ومن خلال دراسة معمقة، تبين أن طيات ترجمة الفيلم قد افتقرت إلى مقومات الجودة ولا سيما الدقة، الصحة اللغوية والمصداقية، وذلك نتيجة تشبع المواضيع العلمية. وفي الختام، تقترح الدراسة مجموعة من التوصيات التطبيقية التي من شأنها أن تساهم في سترجة الأفلام العلمية مستقبلا˝، مع ضمان تحقيق الدقة اللغوية والسرديات القيميّة.
