Studying the Effectiveness of the DeepL Program in Translating Reels of AL Jazeera Channel

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the level of efficiency and capability of DeepL, one of the most prominent AI-based translation programs, in dealing with a specific and sensitive set of vocabulary and terminology associated with the war on Gaza. The focus is on analysing the translation of these words and phrases as they appear in reels published by Al Jazeera, due to the channel's wide reach and continuous coverage of events. In addition, the study aims to assess the accuracy and reliability of the translation provided by the program, and to reveal the extent of its commitment to objectivity and neutrality in conveying the exact meaning of the terms used in the context of the war. The results of the research found that DeepL shows a mixed performance in the translation process, as it succeeds in providing correct and accurate translations at times, while it makes noticeable errors related to subtle linguistic aspects and understanding the general context of the speech, which calls for further analysis and scrutiny to assess the extent to which it can be relied upon to translate this type of content.

Cette étude vise à évaluer le niveau de compétence et de capacité du programme DeepL, l'une des applications de traduction basées sur l'intelligence artificielle les plus importantes, dans le traitement d'un ensemble spécifique et sensible de vocabulaire et de termes liés à la guerre à Gaza. L'accent est mis en particulier sur l'analyse de la traduction de ces mots et expressions tels qu'ils figurent dans les reels publiées par la chaîne Al Jazeera, en raison de la large diffusion et de la couverture continue des événements par cette chaîne. En outre, l'étude vise à évaluer la précision et la fiabilité de la traduction fournie par le programme, et à révéler l'étendue de son engagement envers l'objectivité et la neutralité dans la transmission du sens exact des termes utilisés dans le contexte de la guerre. Les résultats de la recherche ont montré que le programme DeepL présente une performance variable dans le processus de traduction, réussissant à fournir des traductions correctes et précises dans certains cas, tout en commettant des erreurs notables liées à des aspects linguistiques précis et à la compréhension du contexte général du discours, ce qui nécessite une analyse et une vérification supplémentaires pour évaluer dans quelle mesure il est possible de s'y fier pour la traduction de ce type de contenu.

تسعى هذه الدراسة إلى تقصي مستوى الكفاءة والقدرة التي يتمتع بها برنامج DeepL، وهو أحد أبرز تطبيقات الترجمة القائمة على الذكاء الاصطناعي، في التعامل مع مجموعة محددة وحساسة من المفردات والمصطلحات المرتبطة بالحرب على غزة. وينصب التركيز بشكل خاص على تحليل ترجمة هذه الكلمات والعبارات كما وردت في الفيديوهات المختصرة التي تنشرها قناة الجزيرة، لما تتمتع به هذه القناة من انتشار واسع وتغطية مستمرة للأحداث. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، تهدف الدراسة إلى تقييم دقة وموثوقية الترجمة التي يقدمها البرنامج، والكشف عن مدى التزامه بالموضوعية والحيادية في نقل المعنى الدقيق للمصطلحات المستخدمة في سياق الحرب. وقد توصلت نتائج البحث إلى أن برنامج DeepL يظهر أداءً متباينًا في عملية الترجمة، حيث ينجح في تقديم ترجمات صحيحة ودقيقة في بعض الأحيان، بينما يقع في أخطاء ملحوظة تتعلق بالجوانب اللغوية الدقيقة وفهم السياق العام للكلام، مما يستدعي مزيدًا من التحليل والتدقيق لتقييم مدى إمكانية الاعتماد عليه في ترجمة هذا النوع من المحتوى.
