Abstract: The present dissertation examines how cities can represent as a character in the English novels from a postcolonial perspective, with a particular focus on E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India (1924). In addition, the novel describes both colonial and native spaces in a way that reflects the cultural, social, and political tensions of the British Raj or the British India. By focusing on places like Chandrapore, Forster highlights the separation between colonisers and the colonised. Additionally, Forster explores how identity in these urban areas can be complex and constantly changing. This research uses a postcolonial literary analysis, relying on textual analysis to examine how Forster’s depiction of cities questions the power of imperialism. The study explores how urban spaces reflect themes such as cultural hybridity, alienation, and resistance, and how they contribute to the novel’s broader postcolonial discourse. Additionally, By looking at these cities as spaces where postcolonial issues are negotiated, the study aims to show how urban settings contribute to the larger discussions in colonial and postcolonial literature, and the role of cities in a deep understanding to the context of the novel. Future research could explore how cinematic adaptations of colonial literature, including A Passage to India, have visually represented urban spaces and whether these portrayals reinforce or challenge the novel’s postcolonial themes.
