| Abstract: | This study aims to valorize certain plant residues by extracting functional compounds
with suitable properties for the formation of sustainable bio-based films that can serve
as alternatives to conventional plastic films. Cellulose was extracted from three types
of plant residues: American agave residues, eucalyptus tree residues (including bark
and branches), and the by-products of black seed (Nigella sativa) oil extraction. The
extraction yields were 21.11%, 33.92% and 7.88% respectively. Additionally, starch
was extracted from potato peels with a yield of 3.4%. As an additional step to enhance
the functional characteristics of cellulose, a portion of the extracted cellulose from
eucalyptus was chemically converted into cellulose acetate.
Three types of plant extracts were prepared for use as natural additives to enhance the
properties of the biofilms: ethanol extract of eucalyptus leaves, ethanol extract of
Lantana camara leaves, and petroleum ether extract of eucalyptus leaves. Coldpressed Nigella sativa oil was also employed to improve the functional characteristics
of the films and was characterized using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry
(GC-MS).
A total of 11 different biofilm formulations were prepared, including: starch-based
films, starch–cellulose films, starch–cellulose–plant extract films, and starch–plant
extract films. The biodegradability of the prepared films was evaluated under two
different conditions: natural compost and soil. Additional assessments included water
absorption test, solubility in alcohol, and chemical resistance test in acetone, sodium
hydroxide solution, and sulfuric acid solution. The materials were characterized using
Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with
energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) to analyze their chemical
composition, surface morphology, and elemental distribution. The results demonstrate
the potential of these bio-based materials to serve as viable and sustainable
alternatives to conventional plastics, highlighting the effectiveness of plant residues
valorization in eco-friendly applications
