The Role of Social Interaction with Tourists in Enhancing EFL Learners’ Speaking Skills A Case Study of Algerian University Students at Ouargla

Abstract

This study investigates the role of social interaction with tourists in enhancing the speaking skills of EFL learners L3 at Kasdi Merbah University during the academic year 2025–2026. It focuses on freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Department of English Language and Letters, who often have limited opportunities to practice English outside the classroom, which negatively affects their fluency and confidence. The research examines how real-life communication with tourists can provide authentic language exposure and contribute to the development of learners’ speaking abilities. A mixed-method approach was adopted, using questionnaires and classroom observations to collect data from EFL learners who interact with tourists. The findings indicate that social interaction with tourists significantly improves learners’ fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary use, while also reducing speaking anxiety and increasing motivation and self-confidence. The study concludes that engaging with tourists offers a practical and effective way to enhance speaking skills in real-world contexts and recommends integrating communicative, interaction-based activities into language teaching, as well as encouraging learners to seek authentic opportunities for language use beyond the classroom.

Cette étude examine le rôle de l'interaction sociale avec les touristes dans l'amélioration des compétences orales des apprenants d'anglais langue étrangère (EFL). Dans de nombreux contextes d'apprentissage de l'EFL, les apprenants ont peu d'occasions de pratiquer l'anglais en dehors de la classe, ce qui nuit à leur aisance et à leur confiance en eux. Cette recherche analyse comment la communication authentique avec les touristes peut offrir une immersion linguistique réelle et contribuer au développement des compétences orales des apprenants. Une approche mixte a été adoptée, combinant questionnaires et observations pour recueillir des données auprès d'apprenants d'EFL interagissant avec des touristes. Les résultats indiquent que l'interaction sociale avec les touristes améliore significativement l'aisance, la prononciation et le vocabulaire des apprenants. Elle contribue également à réduire l'anxiété liée à l'expression orale et à accroître leur motivation et leur confiance en eux. L'étude conclut que l'interaction avec les touristes constitue un moyen pratique et efficace d'améliorer les compétences orales en situation réelle. Elle recommande d'intégrer des activités communicatives et interactionnelles dans l'apprentissage des langues et d'encourager les apprenants à rechercher des occasions authentiques d'utiliser la langue en dehors de la classe.

تهدف هذه الدراسة لإكتشاف دور التفاعل الاجتماعي مع السياح في تحسين مهارات التحدث لدى متعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. في العديد من سياقات تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية، تتاح للمتعلمين فرص محدودة لممارسة اللغة خارج الفصل الدراسي، مما يؤثر سلبًا على طلاقتهم بأنفسهم. يهدف هذا البحث لإظهار كيفية مساهمة التواصل الواقعي مع السياح في توفير تجربة لغوية حقيقية، وبالتالي تطوير قدرات المتعلمين على التحدث. وقد تم اعتماد منهجية بحثية مختلطة، باستخدام الاستبيانات والملاحظات لجمع البيانات من متعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية الذين يتفاعلون مع السياح. تشير النتائج إلى أن التفاعل الاجتماعي مع السياح يُحسّن بشكل ملحوظ طلاقة المتعلمين ونطقهم واستخدامهم للمفردات. كما أنه يُساعد في تقليل قلق التحدث، ويزيد من دافعية المتعلمين وثقتهم بأنفسهم. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن التفاعل مع السياح يُوفر طريقة عملية وفعالة لتحسين مهارات التحدث في سياقات واقعية. وتوصي الدراسة بدمج الأنشطة التواصلية والتفاعلية في تعلم اللغة، وتشجيع المتعلمين على البحث عن فرص حقيقية لاستخدام اللغة خارج الفصل الدراسي.
