This study examines the mythological manifestations in the poetry of Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, using his famous poem "The Rain Song" as a case study. The research begins with a fundamental question: how does al-Sayyab transform the phenomenon of rain from its natural, physical meaning into a complex mythological symbol linked to the figures of fertility and rebirth (Tammuz and Ishtar) and the figures of historical destruction (Thamud)? The study employs an artistic approach, utilizing the mechanisms of mythological criticism. At certain points, it also employs analytical and descriptive techniques. The study is divided into chapters that address the theoretical nature of myth, the cultural influences (Eastern, Western, and religious) from which the poet drew, and finally, an analysis of the poem's aesthetic and rhythmic structure. The study concludes with several findings, the most important of which is that myth, for al-Sayyab, was not merely an external embellishment, but rather an artistic mask and a structural necessity for escaping direct political expression and conveying the suffering of the individual and the nation. The study also demonstrated al-Sayyab's ability to humanize myth and contextualize it within Iraqi reality, transforming individual pain into a comprehensive human experience, where the musical rhythm merged with the ritual dimension to make the poem a universal hymn heralding the inevitability of rebirth and liberation after death and desolation.
