This study presents a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the optical properties of aluminum nitride (AlN) employing a computational methodology based on density functional theory (DFT) within the plane-wave basis set framework, implemented via the CASTEP code in the Materials Studio environment. The generalized gradient approximation revised for solids (GGA-PBEsol) was adopted, supplemented by a cut-off energy of 630 eV and a Monkhorst-Pack k-point mesh of 20×20×16 to ensure computational convergence and result reliability. The investigation encompassed the calculation of the complex dielectric function, refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, optical conductivity, and energy loss function across a broad spectral range (0–30 eV) for both polycrystalline configurations and principal crystallographic orientations [100], [010], and [001], complemented by three-dimensional representations of the anisotropic distribution of these optical parameters. The results reveal pronounced directional anisotropy consistent with the hexagonal Wurtzite crystal structure. The real part of the dielectric function (ε1) exhibited a 3.8 % enhancement along the [001] orientation at low photon energies, whereas the imaginary component (ε2) attained its maximum within the 12.5–13.5 eV range, with the axial direction demonstrating a 13 % predominance. Anomalous dispersion phenomena were identified in the 8.0–8.6 eV spectral region, and the bulk plasmon resonance peak in the energy loss function was localized at 19.5–20.0 eV. Three-dimensional visualization unveiled substantial variation in anisotropy magnitude among different optical coefficients, with anisotropy ratios spanning from 0.25 % for the extinction coefficient to 28.5 % for the loss tangent. Notably, a reversal in directional ordering between energy storage and dissipation properties was observed, in accordance with Kramers–Kronig causality relations. These findings establish a robust theoretical foundation for the rational design of deep-ultraviolet optoelectronic devices, high-frequency piezoelectric transducers, and high-power electronic components, thereby opening promising avenues for advanced technological applications that exploit the intrinsic directional dependencies of AlN-based materials
