| Abstract: | In this thesis, we investigated two of the most important topics in quantum information science, namely entanglement and quantum steerability, within one of the most widely studied and active platforms in atomic physics: the Jaynes–Cummings model, which describes the dynamics of atom–photon interactions. In particular, we studied the dynamics of entanglement and steerability in the double Jaynes–Cummings model, both in the absence of environmental effects and in the presence of decoherence, where the environment was treated as a reservoir coupled to the system.
The first two chapters of this thesis were devoted to the fundamental concepts on which our study is based. In the first chapter, we discussed atom–photon interactions through the cavity QED model known as the Jaynes–Cummings model. We began by introducing the concept of Rabi oscillations, which represent the central feature of the atom–cavity field dynamics. As an intuitive classical analogy, we considered a two-state spin- system interacting with a magnetic field in order to understand the physical meaning of Rabi oscillations.
We then introduced the quantum electrodynamics Hamiltonian, namely the Jaynes–Cummings Hamiltonian, which describes the interaction between the atom and the quantized electromagnetic field. The Hamiltonian was solved by deriving its eigenvalues and eigenstates, known as dressed states, followed by a discussion of the dynamics of the Jaynes–Cummings states. Finally, we studied the phenomenon of vacuum Rabi oscillations, corresponding to the interac tion between an atom and an initially empty cavity.
In the second chapter, we introduced the concepts of entanglement and quantum steering by discussing the EPR paradox and the limitations of local hidden-variable theories through Bell’s inequality, together with Schrödinger’s response to the EPR argument. We then moved to the characterization and quantification of entanglement and steerability. In particular, we discussed the CJWR inequality as a criterion for quantum steering, as well as entropy and concurrence as measures of entanglement, especially for pure states and mixed states such as X-states.
The main objectives of our study were presented in Chapters Three and Four. In Chapter Three, we investigated the time evolution of entanglement and steerability without considering environmental effects, whereas in Chapter Four the influence of a dephasing reservoir was taken into account. We first discussed how to generate two entangled Jaynes–Cummings atoms and, conversely, how to generate two entangled Jaynes– Cummings cavity modes. We then presented the detailed calculations describing a system of two entangled Jaynes–Cummings atoms, each interacting with its own vacuum cavity. By performing the partial trace over the photonic degrees of freedom, we obtained the reduced density matrix of the two atoms, which enabled us to quantify both entanglement and steerability. Based on the works of J.-H. Eberly, Ya-Xi Ban, and our own analysis, we presented and discussed several important results, including the phenomena of sudden death of entanglement and steerability, the periodic death–revival behavior, the comparison between different types of Bell states, and the differences between concurrence and steerability measurements.
In the final chapter, we briefly introduced the Lindblad formalism and the master equation by discussing the Kraus representation, the assumptions made about the environment, and the role of the jump operators. We then solved the master equation for a single Jaynes–Cummings model under a phase-damping reservoir. After analyzing the time evolution of the single Jaynes–Cummings system in the presence of dephasing, we considered a system of two initially entangled atoms, as in the noiseless case, with each atom independently subjected to phase damping. We presented the detailed calculations describing the evolution of the system and evaluated both the concurrence and the steerability measures. The obtained results revealed important differences between entanglement and steerability quantification under decoherence, as well as their distinct responses for the two types of Bell states.
This work opens the door to further investigations of entanglement and quantum steering within the Jaynes–Cummings model, particularly concerning the comparison between concurrence and steerability under decoherence. Such a comparison is important for improving our understanding of the quantification of quantum correlations and may contribute to the development of more accurate methods for quantum computation and quantum information processing
