The performance and reliability of mud pumps in drilling operations depend strongly on suction conditions. This study investigates suction-related problems in the BMPT-1600-AC triplex mud pump using hydraulic modeling and pressure-loss analysis. The effects of suction pipe diameter, fluid temperature, and flow rate on suction performance and cavitation risk are evaluated. The results show that insufficient charge pressure (below the recommended range of 1.2–3.5 bar) and excessive pressure losses caused by clogged strainers are the main causes of cavitation. In addition, higher fluid temperatures and flow rates reduce the available NPSH and increase cavitation risk. The study highlights the importance of maintaining adequate charge pressure and minimizing suction losses to ensure reliable pump operation. Based on these findings, practical recommendations are proposed to improve suction performance, reduce cavitation, and enhance the reliability and service life of the BMPT-1600-AC mud pump.en_US
