Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites that has helped individuals connect worldwide, but it has also become a double-edged sword. This study aims to identify the impact of online blackmail on female university students through this platform, examining its psychological, social, and academic aspects. It also seeks to measure the students' awareness of mechanisms for confronting online blackmail. The study employed a descriptive methodology, utilizing a questionnaire distributed to a purposive sample of 110 female students from the Department of Media and Communication Sciences at Kasdi Merbah University of Ouargla. The findings address the study's central question. Most notably, online blackmail leaves an intermittent psychological impact, primarily manifesting as difficulty concentrating, tension, and daily anxiety. However, the deeper and more severe impact is felt on a permanent social level, as blackmail creates a state of intense fear of scandal and defamation, a loss of trust in others, social withdrawal, and strained family relationships due to the need to keep the matter secret. The results also revealed a permanent and direct negative impact of cyber extortion on female university students' academic performance, manifested in decreased motivation to study, lower grades, and significant difficulty concentrating during lectures and studying. Conversely, the study showed that female university students possessed a high level of awareness regarding technological protection and prevention mechanisms, particularly concerning the importance of enabling two-step verification, maintaining password security, and avoiding phishing links. |
