| Abstract: | In recent years, the rapid expansion of digital learning platforms, including Learning Management Systems (LMSs) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), has generated large volumes of heterogeneous learner data, making digital education an important domain of Big Data analytics. Within this context, Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining have emerged as major research areas for analysing student engagement, behaviour, and performance through educational traces. However, the early identification of students at risk of dropout remains a major challenge in digital learning environments.
This thesis proposes a preventive analytics approach for education that aims to transform learner-generated data into actionable knowledge for the early detection of dropout risk and the provision of timely and targeted interventions.
The proposed framework relies on large-scale behavioural data extracted from online and distance-learning virtual environments, where student interactions are represented as time-dependent clickstream sequences. In addition, a comparative feature selection study is conducted to identify the most informative behavioural attributes, reduce dimensionality, and improve the efficiency and interpretability of early dropout prediction.
To enhance predictive performance, this thesis develops two optimisation-driven hybrid approaches: GA–XGBoost and GA–TabNet. In these approaches, Genetic Algorithms are used to optimise the configurations of Extreme Gradient Boosting and the TabNet deep learning architecture in order to improve robustness, stability, and predictive effectiveness across successive weekly prediction windows, while supporting early dropout prediction for personalised prevention.
The experimental results, obtained on real-world educational data, show that the proposed framework outperforms traditional machine learning and deep learning baseline models from the early stages of course progression. These findings demonstrate that the integration of feature selection, evolutionary optimisation, and interpretable predictive modelling within a preventive analytics framework provides an effective approach to improving student retention in digital learning environments. |
