The present study aimed to examine differences in the performance of selected components of executive functions among preschool children exposed and unexposed to short-form video content, namely working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. It also aimed to examine the contribution of exposure to short-form video content to the prediction of performance on these functions after controlling for intelligence and level of screen exposure. To achieve these aims, a comparative descriptive design was adopted. The study sample consisted of 77 preschool children, including 29 children in the exposed group and 48 children in the unexposed group. Working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility were assessed using the designated tasks, while intelligence was controlled using the Columbia Mental Maturity Scale, and level of screen exposure was assessed using the ScreenQ. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), hierarchical regression analysis, and partial eta squared (ηp²) as a measure of effect size. The results indicated statistically significant differences in overall executive-function performance between the two study groups, with Wilks’ Lambda = .84, F = 4.58, p = .01, ηp² = .15. The results also showed differences in working memory (F = 4.09, p = .05, ηp² = .052), inhibition (F = 7.58, p = .01, ηp² = .092), and cognitive flexibility (F = 7.11, p = .01, ηp² = .087), with the arithmetic means favoring the unexposed group across the three executive functions. Hierarchical regression results further indicated that the addition of short-form video exposure made a statistically significant contribution to the prediction of inhibition performance, with ΔR² = .09, β = −.356, t = −2.737, p = .01. It also made a statistically significant contribution to the prediction of cognitive flexibility, with ΔR² = .063, β = −.299, t = −2.273, p = .040. In contrast, its contribution to the prediction of working memory was not statistically significant, with β = −.223, t = −1.724, p = .134. Based on partial effect size, inhibition had the highest value (ηp² = .092), followed by cognitive flexibility (ηp² = .087), and working memory (ηp² = .052). The findings indicate differences in the performance of the executive functions examined between the two study groups, with a predictive contribution of short-form video exposure to inhibition and cognitive flexibility, whereas no statistically significant predictive contribution was observed for working memory.
