Localization in Translating Technical Texts from English into Arabic Case of Tools and Equipment Rendition

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the influence of localization on translating technical documents and finding a way to reach a standard final translation, which can be understood to all the Arabs despite their locale. The study was based on technical documents extracted from the HSE documents in the industry of oil and gas (rigs) of the IDC company .The translation was into Arabic by two translators from two distinct locales (Iraq and Algeria). A comparison between two translations was used to conduct this research. Localization is to target the audience with all its specific features relating to its locale. For example: when you deliver a translation for an Egyptian client, it should be different for a Tunisian client. Consequently, the eastern Arab countries translators used the borrowing method and the literal translation in translating technical texts. On the other hand, the western Arab countries translators used the original Arabic equivalence for the technical terms and expressions.

Cette étude vise à investiguer les influences de la localisation sur la traduction des documents techniques et pour atteindre une traduction finale comprise par tous les arabes nonobstant leurs régions différentes. Cette étude est basée sur des documents techniques qui sont extraits des documents HSE de l’industrie des hydrocarbures (appareils de forage) de l’entreprise Irakienne de forage. La traduction a été vers l’arabe par deux traducteurs venus de deux régions différentes (l’Iraq et l’Algérie). La méthode de comparaison entre deux traductions a été utilisée pour faire cette recherche. La localisation est de viser les récepteurs en considérant toutes ses particularités régionales. Par exemple, la traduction pour un client Egyptien inévitablement se diffère de celui pour un autre client de la Tunisie. Par conséquent, les traducteurs des pays arabes de l’est utilisent l’emprunt et la traduction mot à mot dans la traduction des documents techniques, mais les traducteurs des pays arabes de l’ouest essaient de trouver l’équivalent pour les termes et les expressions techniques.

تهدف هذه الدراسة لبحث تأثير الأقلمة في ترجمة الوثائق التقنية وإيجاد طريقة للوصول الى ترجمة نموذجية مفهومة عند كل متحدثي اللغة العربية بغض النظر عن أمكنتهم المختلفة. واعتمدت الدراسة على وثائق مستخرجة من وثائق الحماية والأمن الصناعي في حقل المحروقات (الحفارات) للشركة العراقية للحفر. ترجمت الوثائق الى اللغة العربية بواسطة مترجمين من منطقتين مختلفتين (العراق والجزائر) ولإجراء هذا البحث استخدمت طريقة المقارنة بين ترجمتين. الأقلمة هي مخاطبة المتلقي مع جميع الاعتبارات المتعلقة بمنطقته المميزة له. مثلا الترجمة لزبون مصري تقتضي حتما الاختلاف عن الترجمة لزبون تونسي. وعليه كانت ملاحظتنا عن مترجمي الدول العربية المشرقية استعمالهم لطريقة الاعارة والترجمة الحرفية عن ترجمتهم للنصوص التقنية وفي المقابل يميل مترجمو الدول المغاربية الى ايجاد المقابل الاصلي في اللغة العربية عند ترجمة الألفاظ والعبارات التقنية
