Exploring Machine Translation

Abstract

Since its first introduction in the 1930’s, machine translation was both praised and criticized. Nowadays, MT has been improved significantly, thanks to the technological developments, and became an important tool in the hands of human translators and for people in general, though not without its deficiencies and drawbacks. This dissertation attempts to investigate the issue of success of machine translation as opposed to human translation through a comparison between the two types of translation in selected literary and technical texts. It also sheds light on the linguistic and semantic errors that may occur while using MT in translating certain text types of specialized language.

Depuis sa première introduction dans les années 1930, la traduction automatique a été à la fois louée et critiquée. De nos jours, la traduction automatique s’est considérablement améliorée, grâce aux développements technologiques, et est devenue un outil important entre les mains des traducteurs humains et pour les gens en général, mais non sans ses lacunes et ses inconvénients. Cette thèse tente d’étudier la question du succès de la traduction automatique par opposition à la traduction humaine à travers une comparaison entre les deux types de traduction dans des textes littéraires et techniques sélectionnés. Il met également en lumière les erreurs linguistiques et sémantiques qui peuvent survenir lors de l’utilisation de la traduction automatique dans la traduction de certains types de texte de langage spécialisé.

منذ تقديمها لأول مرة في ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين، تم الإشادة بالترجمة الآلية وانتقادها في آن واحد، لكن الوقت الحاضر كان ولا يزال شاهدا على تحسن و تطور الترجمة الآلية بشكل كبير، وذلك بفضل التطورات التكنولوجية حيث أنها أضحت أداة مهمة في أيدي المترجمين المختصين و للناسعامّة، ولكن هذا لا يعني خلوّ الترجمة الآلية من العيوب و النقائص. وعليه فإن هذه الرسالة تحاول التحقيق في مسألة نجاح الترجمة الآلية بالمقارنة معترجمة الأنسانمن خلال المقارنة بين هذان النوعان من الترجمة فينصوص أدبية وتقنية مختارة. كما تلقي هذه الرسالة الضوء على الأخطاء اللغوية والدلالية التي قد تحدث أثناء استخدام الترجمة الآلية في ترجمة أنواع نصية معينة تلتزم وتستوجب استخدام لغة خاصة متخصصة ضمن إطار لغوي معين.
