Analysis of Metaphor in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables”

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and analyse the metaphor, which is a major rhetorical device used by Lucy Maud Montgomery in Anne of Green Gables. The study's goal is to highlight the use of the aforementioned device, as well as its concept and structure, in order to discover the motivation for using such a device in the novel. The research is analytical descriptive, based on analysing and interpreting metaphors, and includes structural components of this device such as the tenor, vehicle, and shared ground. According to the analysis, Montgomery overuses metaphor in the novel to describe her characters' imaginations as well as their actions and feelings.

Le but de cette thèse est d'étudier et d'analyser la métaphore, qui est un dispositif rhétorique majeur utilisé par Lucy Maud Montgomery dans Anne of Green Gables. L'objectif de l'étude est de mettre en évidence l'utilisation du dispositif susmentionné, ainsi que son concept et sa structure, afin de découvrir la motivation de l'utilisation d'un tel dispositif dans le roman.
