Abstract: This thesis presents a comparative study between Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS) and Positive Displacement Motors (PDM) in horizontal drilling operations. Using two case studies from the Hassi Messaoud field (MDZ-802 with PDM and MDZ-811 with RSS), the performance of both technologies was analysed in terms of rate of penetration (ROP), drilling time, hole quality, and overall cost. The study concludes that RSS significantly improves drilling efficiency and borehole quality, and despite its higher equipment cost, it results in a lower total cost per meter drilled. These results support the adoption of RSS for efficient and cost-effective horizontal well construction.
