Literary Translation as an Intercultural Mediation: The Case of Jonathan Wright’s Translation of The Bamboo Stalk

Abstract

This thesis explored literary translation as intercultural mediation through a case study of Jonathan Wright’s The Bamboo Stalk, translated from Arabic into English. The research was conducted within the framework of Juliane House’s work that categorizes a translation whether it is overt or covert and in terms of explicitation and implicitation. The present work sought to identify cultural elements, linguistic nuances, or implicit meanings within the translated passages. Findings revealed a predominant use of overt translation strategy through the use of explicitation techniques, including addition and specification which are frequently employed to clarify implicit cultural meanings. Foreignization techniques such as transliteration and literal translation further reinforce the overt approach. While less prevalent, covert translation strategy including implicitation through generalization, domestication by adaptation and selective omission were also observed. Although the main strategies detected were overt, as well as a few covert ones, there were some translated words or phrases that were inaccurate.

Cette thèse a exploré la traduction littéraire comme médiation interculturelle à travers une étude de cas de The Bamboo Stalk de Jonathan Wright, traduit de l’arabe vers l’anglais. La recherche a été menée dans le cadre des travaux de Juliane House qui catégorise une traduction qu’elle soit explicite ou implicite et en termes d’explicitation et d’implicitation. Le présent travail vise à identifier les éléments culturels, des nuances linguistiques ou les significations implicites dans les passages traduits. Les résultats ont révélé une utilisation prédominante de la stratégie de traduction explicite par le bias de techniques d’explicitation, notamment l’ajout et la spécification, qui sont fréquemment employées pour clarifier les significations culturelles implicites. Les techniques d’étrangerisation telles que la translittération et de la traduction littérale renforcent encore l’approche explicite. Bien que moins répandues, des stratégies de traduction implicite, notamment l’implicitation par généralisation, la domestication par adaptation et l’omission sélective, ont également été observées. Bien que les principales stratégies détéctées soit explicites, ainsi que quelques stratégies implicites, certains mots ou expressions traduits étaient inexacts.

تناولت هذه الأطروحة الترجمة الأدبية بوصفها وساطة بين الثقافات، من خلال دراسة حالة لترجمة رواية ساق البامبو إلى اللغة الإنجليزية. وقد تم إعداد البحث اعتمادا على نظرية جوليان هاوس التي تصنف الترجمة إلى ترجمة ظاهرة وترجمة مستترة إلى جانب مفهومي الإيضاح والاضمار في الترجمة . يهدف البحث للتعرف على العناصر الثقافية، الاختلافات اللغوية و المعاني الضمنية في النص الهدف. أظهر البحث هيمنة استراتيجية الترجمة الظاهرة، من خلال توظيف تقنيات الإيضاح و التي تشمل الإضافة والتخصيص المستعمل لتوضيح المعاني الثقافية الضمنية. وقد استخدمت تقنيات التغريب مثل النقحرة والترجمة الحرفية لتعزيز النهج الواضح في الترجمة. أما تقنيات استراتيجية الترجمة المستترة كالاستدلال من خلال التعميم، والتدجين من خلال التكييف، والحذف الانتقائي فقد تم الاعتماد عليها في بعض الحالات المحدودة على الرغم من الاعتماد على استراتيجية الترجمة الظاهرة بصفة رئيسية في جانب استخدام الترجمة المستترة في بعض الحالات، إلا أن ترجمة بعض الكلمات أو العبارات في النص الهدف كانت غير دقيقة.
