Investigating French interference on English style of writing in translating administrative documents in Algeria (Miscellaneous)

Abstract

The historical dominance of French language stemmed in Algerian administration due to the colonial heritage and cultural prestige. Nowadays, the translation of business and administration documents had become a key focus due to various factors. The multinational companies operating in the oilfields on one hand, and the need to enhance the quality of higher education in Algeria on the other hand. However, translators encounter challenges when translating specialized administrative and legal terminology notably when dealing with nomenclature originated from francophone administrative system, which leads to the interference between the two languages at lexical level or in style of writing. The present study is intended to shed light on the sources of the faulty French-English translation caused by linguistic and syntactic interference in the translated administrative documents in Algeria. Additionally, it shows some comparative stylistics between the two languages, then providing suggested translations to the errors.

La dominance historique de la langue française dans l’administration algérienne est due à l’héritage colonial et au prestige culturel. La traduction des documents commerciaux et administratifs est désormais un sujet principal pour plusieurs raisons. Les entreprises étrangères opérant dans le domaine pétrolier, d’une part, et la nécessite d’améliorer la qualité d’enseignement supérieur en Algérie, d’une autre part. Cependant, les traducteurs rencontrent des difficultés lors de l’opération de traduction de la terminologie administrative et juridique spécialisée, notamment lorsqu’ ils traitent avec la nomenclature à l’ origine du système administrative francophone, ce qui entraine des interférences entre les deux langues au niveau lexical ou bien au niveau de style d’écriture. . En conséquence, cette étude a pour objet de viser les sources des erreurs de traductions français-anglais causées par l’interférence linguistique et syntaxique dans les documents administratifs traduise en Algérie. Cette étude présente également quelques comparatives stylistiques entre les deux langues, puis proposer des traductions pour les erreurs.

تجذرت الهيمنة التاريخية للغة الفرنسية في الادارة الجزائرية بسبب الارث الاستعماري والسمعة الثقافية. تحظى ترجمة الوثائق التجارية والادارية باهتمام بالغ في الوقت الحاضر لعدة اسباب أبرزها الشركات الاجنبية العاملة في قطاع النفط من جهة وكذلك توجه قطاع التعليم العالي إلى استخدام اللغة الانجليزية بغية تحسين جودة التعليم من جهة أخرى. في حين يواجه المترجمون تحديات وصعوبات أثناء ترجمة المفردات الادارية والقانونية المتخصصة لاسيما عند التعامل مع التسميات لبعض الوثائق الادارية ذات الاصول النظام الاداري الفرنكفوني مما يؤدي إلى تداخل بين اللغتين. تسلط هذه الدراسة الضوء حول مصادر الترجمات الخاطئة من اللغة الفرنسية إلى اللغة الانجليزية الناجمة عن تداخل لغوي أو تداخل تركيبي في الوثائق الادارية المترجمة في الجزائر. كما تظهر هذه الدراسة بعض المقارنات الأسلوبية بين اللغتين وتهدف أيضا إلى اقتراح ترجمات مناسبة للأخطاء.
