Abstract: Challenges associated with conventional overbalanced drilling have driven the adoption of alternative technologies such as Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD). MPD is an adaptive drilling technique that accurately controls the annular pressure profile using a closed-loop circulation system and surface backpressure to keep bottom-hole pressure within a narrow operating window. The system relies on automatic choke control through a choke manifold, providing more precise pressure management than manual methods. Different control strategies, including PID and ANN, can be applied to optimize drilling performance. This thesis focuses on developing a robust drilling simulation model and designing an optimal control system, with simulations used to evaluate and select the most effective control approach before field implementation.
