The Ouargla region, located in the Algerian Sahara, faces a drinking water shortage due to the high salinity of its groundwater (approximately 3 g/L). To address this, nine reverse osmosis demineralization plants have been built. This study analyzes the maintenance of three representative plants: Gharbouz, Ziaina, and Bamandil. To address this issue, we recommend a strategy based on intensive preventive maintenance combined with the integration of a backup (standby) pump into the operating system. This strategic approach will: Ensure continuity of service (water pumping) and completely eliminate unplanned downtime during a breakdown; Increase pump lifespan through alternating operation between the main and backup pumps; Reduce overall maintenance costs and streamline the management of essential spare parts inventory
